Getting Down To Basics with Resources

Why a Fiction Author Should Increase their Vocabulary

On a regular basis, fiction authors use certain vocabularies when writing. For you to have a big number of words to choose from when writing, you need to learn other vocabularies. It is best to use verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives that best bring out the writing if you are a fiction writer. How well you put together the words and the words themselves make up for good writing. When a novel you are reading is engaging, you will easily get into it. The novel should be reread after you enjoyed reading it the first time. Examining how the work is written is the goal. Put your focus on the creative aspect of the writing, this entails how the plot and characters were developed as well as the technical aspects such as grammar. You should know that American and British authors write differently.

The authors differ in the use of words, spelling and punctuation. While Americans use among, the British use the word amongst. It is important that you stick to the standard rules when writing for American readers or for British readers.

Fiction authors can and should expand the base of the vocabulary that they use. Doing this is possible when they are reading another author's work. Noting down any new vocabulary that you come across is very important. Most authors do not do this even though it is general knowledge. Besides it being a logical thing to do, it is one way of building your vocabulary. Another thing to do is to get a notebook or any other system that you desire, and make categories that suit your needs. When people are talking or when there is a dialogue on the TV and when you are reading you should be keen to listen. Take note of the verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives or any compound nouns that are being used. There are words that you already use, the ones that you did not know and those you never thought of using, you will discover either if this. The words or phrases that your characters might occasionally use should be kept. When describing the action of the eye, use a phrase like 'her eyes surveyed the room.

You will be able to describe vividly what is going on internally and externally regarding your characters if you take notes of such words and phrases. You will be able to rephrase your words and write authentic and creative vocabulary when using the lists you kept. Use this list when making your draft.
